Chapter 13

Tariq

He’d called Allie as soon as he got Mila back to her room. She seemed fine, even if she was a little shaken. And in the confines of the hotel, she was perfectly safe. Allie had agreed to stay with her for a little while.

Mila had decided she didn’t want to be cooped up in her hotel room, and the two of them were downstairs at the restaurant bar. It wasn’t that he wanted to coddle her, he just didn’t think she should be left alone. Okay, maybe he was coddling her a little. But he wasn’t neglecting his work to hover around her.

Though, the meeting he was about to have as soon as Logan came online wasn’t technically work. Not yet, at least. But Tariq had a hunch. A conversation he had overheard a few months back when he did an AV gig for a charity banquet the rugby team was hosting. Barry had been invited as a guest of Bill Jansen’s, the CEO of Thunder Rugby at the time.

Since then, of course, Bill had been fired after the team management was accused of sexual harassment by the cheerleaders.

At the time Tariq thought the two men were discussing a new business venture. They mentioned goods that needed to be shipped and keeping the merchandise in tip top condition. He had mentioned to Mila that the women that were going missing weren’t viewed as human beings but rather as merchandise. When he put all the pieces together, he believed what the two men were discussing was a whole lot more disgusting. Added to the fact that Barry’s head of security turned up the day after Allie uploaded that video, telling everyone where Mila was, he believed she may well be in danger.

Linking it to the case they were busy on was a bit of a stretch, he knew that. It could all be a coincidence. Barry could well have been scouting for talent on YouTube. Or the security was really scouting out a location. On his own. Things like that did happen. But the man he remembered, would consider it beneath himself to be trolling for vocalists on social media. No doubt, his staff did it. But not the man himself.

A knock at the door pulled him from the unwanted memory of the man who had destroyed his career. In hindsight, he should probably thank the vengeful asshole, since he loved his job with Ward Security. Even if it left him with no personal life.

Tariq opened the door. Jack stood in the doorway with his hand raised as if he was about to knock again. “Why didn’t you tell me what happened?”

It seemed Denise wasn’t as much of a loner as they thought she was. Obviously, she had told someone about what she saw backstage.

“There’s nothing really to tell.” Tariq walked back into the room and flopped onto his bed. “She remembered the song we sang together. And remembered being afraid of someone who was present when she was singing.
